ENGINEERING JOB OPPORTUNITIES

There are three types of engineering disciplines which are generally useful to us and for which we are sometimes hiring:

Mechanical & Material Engineers

Chemical-Environmental Engineers
Product Safety Engineers

If you are interested in any of these positions, prior to applying we would expect you to do the following:
1. Read the following position description.
2. Look at example tasks that we would expect you or one of your subordinates to produce.
3. Review various parts of our website to understand the projects that we work on as well as the types of clients that hire us.
4. After submitting your resume, it is likely that we will ask you to submit a writing sample i.e. a paper that you have authored.
5. Your extra curricular and recreational activites can be important to the large variety of projects we undertake. Be sure to include your outside-the-classroom or -office activities in your resume or cover letter.
Please note: We do not currently need people with specialties in CAD or software development.

Position Description:

1. Miller Engineering has U. of Michigan and Purdue U. faculty represented as principals.

2. We specialize in the design/redesign of consumer products and some in-plant processing equipment and regularly get involved with both the functional and instructions/warnings aspects of a product's design.

3. While there is some automotive work, we tend to focus more on heavy trucks, industrial vehicles, off-road equipment, recreational vehicles (including numerous boat and marine-related projects), toxic chemicals affecting workers and consumers, and environmental contamination.

4. Many projects involve product research or testing from an engineering and safety perspective with the objective of making recommendations for improved designs or product literature, or to determine how a product failed as a part of an accident.

5. Product research, report writing and oral presentation of results, client contact and supervision of engineering and para-legal researchers are important parts of the job.

6.The prospective engineer should also be comfortable with instrumentation devices, recording and analyzing data, using equipment, designing experiments, and performing statistical analyses. An engineer with our company should be prepared to change topics and projects weekly.

7. Since this position includes many projects that involve equipment, process, or chemical accidents, applicant must also have course work, experience or a sincere willingness to learn about safety issues and accident reconstruction.

8. An interest in product, premise or environmental liability law is required since most of our projects have some relationship to a product's forensic/regulation/standards/litigation status. Consequently, an applicant must have extremely good English language verbal and written abilities which will be used in both client and court related communication.

9. Chemical/Environmental Projects: We frequently do work involving chemical and environmental issues, including toxic torts, chemical contamination in soil, water, and air, and workplace contamination. Work in this area includes liability litigation cases, RCRA and OSHA compliance, and MSDS preparation. These projects typically involve extensive legal research and analysis.

10. Engineering students at advanced levels wishing to have summer or part time work continuing into the fall should have an interest in developing a career along the above lines, and should be able to accomplish some of the technical tasks described.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree: Mechanical/ Electrical/Environmental/Chemical, possibly others.
  • A Masters Degree in one of the above disciplines desirable but not necessary
  • Applicant has passed or is willing to take EIT exams, or is now a Professional Engineer.
  • Optional: PhD degree or PhD Candidate
  • Experience: Applicants may be new Bachelors or Masters graduates, have considerable experience beyond Masters degree, or have completed PhD course work.
  • Location/Travel: Initial training and work in Ann Arbor. Occasional travel in US and to our other offices in the Northwest.

We can offer 20-40 hours/week at $20-$30/hr with flex hours possible. Medical may be available. Please provide a brief resume by Fax 734-747-9712 or click here to e-mail us.

TECHNICAL RESEARCHERS/WRITERS

English, general engineering, physical sciences, library research and legal backgrounds are all useful for performing regulatory, industry, product and legal research which would then be documented into summaries and reports. Many depositions (legal transcripts) describing various aspects of accidents are also summarized as part of this position.

Half to full time flexible hours and medical may be available. $15-$20/hr. E-mail website or fax 734-747-9712.

Additional Information: The types of projects and publications one might work on are listed within the website but generally have some relationship to a product's forensic/litigation aspects, like safety, flammability, useability, warnings, instructions, ergonomics, or toxic by-products. We receive numerous legal documents including deposition and trial transcripts which are summarized and put into the form of reports. This web site describes more about the types of projects we specialize in. Note that most projects are related to worker safety and consumer product safety and accidents.
